Watching Movies

It is one of the major ways BITsians do thier timepass (or timewaste ?!?). This habit has crippled many a BITSian, robbing people of thier grades, their stature in BITSian society etc.. etc.. It is one of the most common ways BITSians make themselves feel guilty. Now to those of you who feel guilty about watching too many movies ... here's what i have to say :

Movies are one of the most profound sources of wisdom. They are obviously inspired by real life. Watching a movie reminds you of life from a larger perspective, shows you life takes u-turns even from the worst situations. They also give you lots of different ideas which you can implement in real life, ranging from playing pranks to propsing. Movies make you quick-witted, sharp and a great thinker ... and these qualities are enough for you to have a successful life. movies give you hope and relief when you see people emerging successful facing similar challenges as you are. Like Udaan, which i watched recently, is about a guy who hates engineering and runs away from his house to become a writer. Many movies are coming up on similar themes ...

A movie can be your best friend.

Any other nice things about movies you can think of ?

PS Do watch Udaan, its awesome ! :)

Pilani ...

Did padmasadhana. Feeling really blissful, went out of campus. Sat in front of the bus stand, a glass of papaya shake and a plate of boondis in my hand. There was a nice blend of quietude, peace coupled with the sounds of evening Pilani traffic on rajgarh road. at that time, i really felt a part of Pilani, sitting in the midst of people busily carrying out thier everyday lives.

"Bhau, ek bisleri ki botal la dena ... ek liter waali ..."

Totally absorbed in my own thoughts, i never looked to see the asker, yet for some reason, that particular sentence stood out in my mind. maybe it was the language, so typically rural ... and i loved hearing it, maybe just as how a european tourist would love seeing cows and naked children on Indian streets. Maybe the feeling was so strong because a year later i would be back to Chennai, where i won't get to hear this kind of language, this being my last year at college ...

whatever the reason, at that very moment, i felt a surge of love and belongingness with Pilani, its people, . I just felt really nice to have been here ... The simplicity of the people here is just stunning ...

Narada's past

The following is an abridged excerpt from the Bhagavata Purana. Please read the introduction.

(This is not a continuation of the previous post.)

Narada said, "Do you know how i became a bhakta of Lord Vishnu ?"

On the banks of the lake, a pippala tree grew, and I sat down and shut my eyes. I began to meditate as the rishis of the Ashrama had taught me and I felt my eyes fill with unaccountable tears, and my body, with an indescribable joy.
Slowly, Hari manifested himself in my heart. My hair stood on end, a flashflood of ecstasy swept me out of myself. I don't know how long the communion lasted, it may have been a moment or a year, but as suddenlly as he had come to me my ineffable Lord was gone.

I opened my eyes and jumped up, in some despair.

Then, a great voice spoke to me from everywhere. 'you will find me again, when all the desires in your heart have been quelled. And when you have cast off this gross body of yours, you wil be my friend and my emissary. Remember, i am with you always."

From the Bhagavata Purana : Narada and Bhakti

The following is an abridged excerpt from the Bhagavata Purana. Please read the introduction.

... Narada said “ Sages, on the banks of the Yamuna, I saw a young woman, seated on the banks of the river. She was young and exquisite, but she was wan as a wilted lotus. She shed tears, she wept without pause, and was inconsolable.

I asked her, 'Lovely one, who are you ?'

She sighed deeply, and said 'I am called Bhakti. I am Devotion.

It was the kali yuga, Narada, which crippled me in all my parts, like a terrible disease. I became an old crone. Muni, I beg you, tell me how this has happened ...'

I looked at my own heart, where the lord puts his wisdom and vision when he chooses, and I said to Bhakti, 'Pure, sinless one, do not be dejected. The Lord Hari will bring bliss into your life again.

This is indeed the kali yuga, when the good suffer endlessly, and the evil are exhilarant. The earth is so full of sin ...

For sure, the kali yuga lacks every other virtue. Yet, this is the only yuga in which the very name of the Lord can set a man free.

Dear Bhakti, don't let anxiety have its way with you. In the krita yuga, the treta and the dwapara, gyana and dhyana conferred nirvana. But in this vile kali, only bhakti can save one's soul. This, more than any other, is your age, Bhakti Devi.

You, Bhakti Devi, shall be worshipped above every other goddess in the Kali yuga. Why, you shall be the only way to salvation.

Those that say the kali yuga is an age of evil forget that this wonderful age is the yuga when moksha is nearest. I say to you, Bhakti, this is the most wonderful of all ages of men!

Who needs vedas and Shastras in the kali yuga? You, Bhakti, alone shall be the way to salvation' ...

The Bhagavata Purana

"Even after he has composed the awesome Mahabharata, the Maharishi Vyasa finds no peace. Narada Muni says to him, 'Ordinary men will be delighted by your work, but what about the sages of heaven and earth? You have described the human life, its strife and its ends, but you have not yet described the Lord himself. You must turn your great gift to that task; only then will you find peace.'
Veda Vyasa composes the Bhagavata Purana, in eighteen thousand slokas and twelve kandas. He teaches it to his illumined son Suka, who narrates the 'Secret Purana' to Yudhishtira's heir, King Parikshit, on the banks of the Ganga.

No other Indian scripture claims that it can bestow Moksha merely by being heard; but the Bhagavata Purana is a living embodiment of the Lord Narayana.

Just before Krishna, the Avatara, leaves the world, Uddhava says to him, 'The kali yuga has begun and evil will rise up and seize the earth. Who will be our light in the gathering night? Leave us a tangible form, Lord, in which we can find you, touch you, and be near you.

Krishna enters the Bhagavata Purana with all of his being: to read this amrita Purana is to be with Krishna. It consumes the sins of a million lives, it bestows untold fortune, and it is said to be the rarest treasure on earth."

In the next few posts, I shall share what I have read from the scripture.
